Julie Levy 'Teacher of the Year 2003 for Excellence in Special Needs Teaching |
As Head
of Special Educational Needs and Inclusion at Westleigh High School, Julie, according to her head teacher, revolutionised
the teaching provision for the students under her care in just 2 years. The SEN Department became a vibrant hub for multi-agency
work, with the Inclusion Centre and the specially designed Nurture Group providing support, opportunities to experience success
and build self esteem.
With excellent teaching skills Julie made a huge impact on SEN across the whole school. A colleague commented,
‘She is excellent to work with, truly brilliant, she has energy, commitment and personality. She’s a little bundle
of dynamite!’
A parent
said of her, ‘She is not like a superteacher who makes you feel inadequate; she makes you feel good about yourself.
A pupil summing up Julie said ‘We have her twice in one day - it’s wicked that.’
After leaving Westleigh, Julie worked as Senior Teacher Advisor for Lancashire,
delivering training and support to schools across the country and helping them to improve their inclusive practice and pupil
attainment. She was the national lead trainer for PIVATS, writing and delivering a comprehensive training programme that responded
to the unique needs of different groups of staff and pupils. She also re-wrote the assessment document in light of changes
to the P Scales.
